This calculator estimates dancing energy expenditure using style-specific MET values from the Adult Compendium of Physical Activities. It multiplies body weight, dancing time, and the MET for the chosen style: slow ballroom such as waltz and foxtrot at 3.0 METs (code 03040), fast ballroom at 5.5 METs (code 03030), aerobic dance at 7.3 METs (code 03029), and vigorous nightclub, folk, and line dancing at 9.8 METs (code 03031). How the dancing estimate works

The calculator applies the MET equation — MET × body mass (kg) × hours — with style-banded values from the Adult Compendium of Physical Activities. Four entries span the social-to-athletic range: ballroom slow (waltz, foxtrot, tango, and similar partner dances) at 3.0 METs (code 03040); ballroom fast at 5.5 METs (code 03030); aerobic dance at 7.3 METs (code 03029); and vigorous nightclub, disco, folk, line, and Irish step dancing at 9.8 METs (code 03031). The spread is more than threefold, so style choice moves this estimate more than any plausible error in weight or timing.

The formula, worked through

A 75 kg dancer in a one-hour aerobic dance class: 7.3 × 75 × 1 = 547.5, rounded to 548 kcal — about 9.1 kcal per minute, similar to steady cycling at around 20 km/h. Net of the resting baseline the class costs 473 kcal.

A second scenario: a slow social evening

A 68 kg dancer doing 90 minutes of slow ballroom: 3.0 × 68 × 1.5 = 306 kcal. Same floor, same evening, less than half the per-minute rate of the aerobic class — slow partner dancing is closer to unhurried walking than to exercise-class intensity. At the opposite extreme, two hours of vigorous folk or club dancing at 75 kg reaches 9.8 × 75 × 2 = 1,470 kcal, a figure competitive with long-distance running sessions.

The floor-time problem

The published entries price time actually spent dancing. A three-hour wedding reception or club night is not three hours of movement: sets alternate with conversation, drinks, and sitting out songs. Estimating honest floor time — perhaps 40 minutes per hour in an energetic venue, far less at a seated event — matters more than the style band. Fitness trackers consistently disagree with MET tables on dance nights largely because of this accounting question, not the arithmetic.

Where style bands blur

Dance intensity varies within a single song, let alone a style. Salsa danced socially sits near the fast-ballroom entry, while performance-level salsa approaches the vigorous band. Competitive Latin ballroom has been measured well above the 5.5 MET social entry. Zumba-style fitness classes are best matched to the 7.3 aerobic entry, and step-heavy Irish or folk sessions to 9.8. The bands are honest averages across skill levels and venues, so dancers at the intense end of any style outrun their band's constant.

Gross versus net

The headline number is gross energy for the period, including the roughly 1 MET of resting metabolism. The net row removes it: for the one-hour aerobic example, 473 kcal is attributable to dancing itself. For multi-hour social events, using net figures avoids crediting the evening with energy the body would have spent sitting at the table anyway.

Where the numbers come from

The Compendium's dance entries descend from oxygen-uptake measurements of social and exercise dancing accumulated over decades, updated in the 2024 Adult Compendium revision — which raised the vigorous nightclub and folk entry to 9.8 METs from earlier editions' 7.8, reflecting newer measurements of step dancing and high-tempo club styles. Tools built on different Compendium editions therefore disagree on this style band by up to 25%, one reason published dance-calorie figures vary so widely between sites.

Questions

Which option fits a Zumba or dance-fitness class?
The aerobic dance entry at 7.3 METs is the closest published match for choreographed fitness classes, including Zumba-style formats. Published measurements of such classes typically land between 6 and 8 METs depending on choreography and how fully participants execute the moves, so 7.3 is a reasonable class-average. A back-row participant marking the steps will fall below it; an instructor performing full-out for the whole hour will sit above.
How should I count time at a wedding or club night?
Count floor time, not event time. The Compendium entries assume continuous dancing, and social events alternate dancing with sitting, talking, and queueing at the bar. An energetic guest might genuinely dance 30–40 minutes per hour; many dance far less. Entering three event-hours as dancing time is the single largest error this calculator's users can make — it can triple the estimate.
Why does slow ballroom rate only 3.0 METs?
Waltz, foxtrot, and similar slow partner dances move at walking-pace tempos with small steps and long held frames. Measured oxygen uptake places them near easy walking — meaningful movement, but a third of the vigorous nightclub entry. The fast-ballroom entry at 5.5 METs captures quickstep-tempo dancing, and competitive ballroom performed at full intensity has been measured higher still than either social entry.
Is dancing comparable to gym cardio for energy cost?
At the vigorous end, yes. The 9.8 MET nightclub and folk entry matches the published cost of running at 9.7 km/h, and an hour of aerobic dance at 7.3 METs is close to an hour of moderate rowing or cycling. The practical difference is continuity: gym cardio is metered and continuous, while dance intensity surges and settles with the music, so session averages depend heavily on the playlist and the dancer.
Does skill level change the calorie cost?
In both directions. Beginners often work harder than the band value through inefficient movement and excess tension, while skilled dancers execute the same choreography with less wasted motion. At the same time, skilled dancers typically dance bigger — fuller extension, more airtime — which raises cost again. The published averages absorb both effects; individual sessions plausibly range ±20% around them.
