Percentage change and why the direction matters
A percentage change is the difference divided by the starting value, which means the same absolute change reads differently depending on where it started. Two kilograms off 100 kg is 2%; the same two kilograms off 60 kg is 3.3%.
The asymmetry also runs in the other direction: a 20% fall followed by a 20% rise does not return to the starting point, because the second percentage is taken of a smaller base. That is why change is normally tracked against a fixed reference rather than chained between consecutive readings.
Body weight in particular carries daily noise from hydration, glycogen and gut contents that can exceed a week of underlying change. Comparing weekly averages rather than individual mornings is what separates a trend from a measurement.
Volume and training-block arithmetic
Volume load multiplies sets by repetitions by load, giving a single tonnage figure for a session. It is a useful summary and a lossy one: ten sets of ten at 60 kg and five sets of five at 120 kg score differently despite both being credible sessions, and neither figure captures proximity to failure.
Weekly hard sets per muscle group is the alternative accounting, and the research summaries commonly quoted describe a range of roughly 10 to 20 weekly sets per muscle across studied populations. The volume comparison tool counts sets against that range rather than scoring them.

Common questions
How do you calculate percentage weight change?
Subtract the starting weight from the current weight, divide by the starting weight, and multiply by 100. Going from 82 kg to 78 kg is a change of −4 kg, which divided by 82 gives −4.9%. Using the starting figure as the denominator is what makes the result comparable between people of different sizes, and it is also why the same absolute change reads as a larger percentage for a lighter person.
Why does my weight fluctuate day to day?
Body weight includes water, glycogen and gut contents, all of which move over hours. Glycogen alone binds roughly three grams of water per gram stored, so a change in carbohydrate intake shifts scale weight without any change in tissue. Day-to-day swings of one to two kilograms are ordinary. Comparing weekly averages rather than single mornings is what makes a series readable as a trend.
Is volume load or weekly sets the better measure?
They summarise different things and both discard information. Volume load in tonnage captures total mechanical work but treats ten sets of ten at a light load as equivalent to a much harder session of the same tonnage. Weekly hard sets per muscle ignores load entirely but tracks closer to how training studies report their protocols. Tracking both, and noting which one a change was driven by, is more informative than either alone.
