This calculator estimates energy expenditure on an elliptical trainer using MET values from the Adult Compendium of Physical Activities. It takes body weight, session duration, and an effort setting, then applies the published MET for that effort level — 5.0 for moderate work (code 02048) or 9.0 for vigorous work (code 02049) — to return total kilocalories. Secondary rows show the MET used, the kilojoule equivalent, and the net figure with the resting baseline removed. The estimate represents a population average for steady, continuous striding rather than an individual measurement.

How the elliptical estimate works
The calculator prices an elliptical session with the MET equation: energy cost equals MET × body mass in kilograms × duration in hours. MET values come from the Adult Compendium of Physical Activities, which assigns elliptical training two entries: 5.0 METs for moderate effort (activity code 02048) and 9.0 METs for vigorous effort (code 02049). One MET corresponds to roughly 1 kcal per kilogram of body mass per hour, so the arithmetic reduces to multiplying three numbers.
The formula, worked through
A 75 kg exerciser striding at moderate effort for 30 minutes: 5.0 × 75 × 0.5 = 187.5, which the tool rounds to 188 kcal. The same session expressed in SI units is about 785 kJ. Because the Compendium figure is a gross value — it includes the energy the body would have spent at rest anyway — the tool also reports a net figure computed at (MET − 1): 4.0 × 75 × 0.5 = 150 kcal attributable to the exercise itself.
A second scenario
A 90 kg exerciser working vigorously for 45 minutes: 9.0 × 90 × 0.75 = 607.5, rounded to 608 kcal. The jump from 188 to 608 kcal illustrates how strongly the estimate responds to all three inputs at once — heavier body, longer session, and the higher MET band each multiply through the result.
Moderate or vigorous — which band applies
The two published entries sit far apart, and self-classified effort is the largest source of error in this estimate. Compendium conventions treat moderate work as roughly 3.0–5.9 METs — a pace at which conversation remains possible — while vigorous work raises breathing enough that speaking in full sentences becomes difficult. Casual elliptical use at self-selected resistance typically lands in the moderate band. Interval work, high resistance, or deliberate race-pace efforts move a session toward the 9.0 MET entry. A session that mixes both is not represented by either single value; the arithmetic mean of the two bands (7.0) is one commonly used compromise, entered via a custom MET tool.
Console readouts versus MET estimates
Elliptical consoles display their own calorie figures, generated from manufacturer equations that use pedal force, cadence, and sometimes an entered body weight. Published comparisons against laboratory measurement have found console readouts on cardio equipment can overstate expenditure, in some cases by 20% or more, partly because defaults assume a heavier or lighter user and partly because the machines report gross rather than net values without saying so. The MET method is not individualised either, but its assumptions are published and inspectable: a fixed intensity constant, body mass, and time.
Gross versus net
The headline figure answers the question "how much energy did the body use during this session?" The net figure answers "how much extra energy did the session cost compared with sitting still?" For comparisons against food intake or for summing a daily energy budget, the net figure avoids double-counting resting metabolism. Over the 30-minute moderate example the difference is 38 kcal — small per session, but it compounds across daily logging.

Comparisons against laboratory calorimetry have found cardio-equipment readouts can overstate expenditure by 20% or more. The MET method used here is also an approximation, but its constants are published and its arithmetic is transparent, which makes the estimate reproducible across machines and sessions.
- What separates moderate from vigorous effort on an elliptical?
- The Compendium's moderate band (roughly 3.0–5.9 METs) corresponds to work at which conversation remains comfortable; the vigorous band (6.0 METs and above) corresponds to breathing hard enough that full sentences become difficult. On an elliptical, self-selected casual use generally sits in the moderate 5.0 MET entry, while sustained high-resistance or interval-style work is closer to the 9.0 MET vigorous entry.
- Do resistance and incline settings change the estimate?
- Not directly. The two published MET entries encode effort level, not machine settings, so raising resistance only changes the estimate if it moves the session from the moderate band into the vigorous one. In practice higher resistance at the same cadence does raise true energy cost gradually, which is one reason a two-band model drifts for sessions that sit between the published entries. A custom MET calculator accepts intermediate values for that case.
- Is the result gross or net calories?
- The headline number is gross: it includes the roughly 1 MET the body spends at rest during the same window. The secondary row labelled net subtracts that baseline, computing (MET − 1) × mass × hours. For a 75 kg person over 30 moderate minutes the difference is about 38 kcal. When summing exercise against food intake, the net figure avoids counting resting metabolism twice.
- How does elliptical work compare with running for energy cost?
- At vigorous effort the elliptical's 9.0 MET entry approaches the cost of running at around 9.7 km/h, while moderate elliptical work at 5.0 METs is closer to brisk walking. The elliptical achieves this with lower joint impact because the feet never leave the pedals. Individual technique matters: leaning on the handrails reduces load-bearing work and lowers true expenditure below the table value.
