What this tool does

This calculator performs the clock arithmetic behind time-restricted eating schedules. It takes the hour of the first meal and the length of the eating window in hours, then returns the time the window closes, the number of hours outside the window, and when that gap starts and ends. The tool describes the schedule the user has chosen — in the same way a sleep calculator lays out sleep blocks — and makes no claims about whether any particular schedule is beneficial, suitable, or appropriate for anyone.

How Eating Window Clock works

The calculator takes two numbers — the hour of the first meal and the length of the eating window — and lays the schedule out on a 24-hour clock. It adds the window length to the first-meal hour to find the closing time, then reports the remaining hours of the day as the fasting block, running from the window's close to the next day's first meal. Nothing else happens: no physiology is modelled, no adjustment is made for meal size or composition, and no judgement is attached to any pattern. The tool restates a chosen schedule as clock times, exactly as a sleep-cycle calculator restates a wake time as bedtimes.

The arithmetic

Window end = (first-meal hour + window hours) mod 24. Hours outside the window = 24 − window hours. With the defaults — first meal at 12:00 and an 8-hour window — the window closes at 12 + 8 = 20:00, and the remaining 24 − 8 = 16 hours run from 20:00 to 12:00 the following day. The modulo operation wraps any total past midnight back onto the clock, so a 10-hour window opening at 19:00 closes at 05:00 rather than at a nonexistent 29:00.

Common patterns as numbers

The shorthand used for these schedules is window-agnostic arithmetic: the first figure is the hours outside the window, the second the hours inside it, and the two always sum to 24. A 12:12 split is simply half the day each way, and the calculator accepts any window from 4 to 12 hours, so all of the named patterns, and everything between them, reduce to the same addition.

The example rows are all anchored to a 19:00 close to make the structure visible: each two-hour reduction in window length pushes the first meal two hours later while the closing time stays put. Anchoring to the first meal instead — as this calculator does — holds the opening fixed and moves the close earlier, which is the same arithmetic read from the other end.

Windows that cross midnight

Shift workers and late eaters sometimes run windows that span midnight. The arithmetic is unchanged: a first meal at 20:00 with an 8-hour window closes at 04:00, and the 16 hours outside the window run from 04:00 to 20:00 within the same calendar day. The tool handles the wrap automatically; only the labels shift, with the fasting block sitting in daytime instead of overnight.

What this tool does not do

This calculator does not evaluate, endorse, or rank any eating schedule. It makes no claims about weight, metabolism, energy, appetite, or health outcomes of any kind, and the length of the window entered is treated purely as a number of hours. It does not account for what is eaten, when medication is taken, training times, sleep timing, or any medical circumstance. Decisions about diet pattern, meal timing, or fasting of any duration are individual clinical matters — a physician or registered dietitian is the appropriate source of guidance, particularly for anyone with diabetes, a history of disordered eating, pregnancy, or medication schedules tied to food.

Questions

What exactly counts as the eating window?
In the published literature on time-restricted eating, the window is usually defined as the span from the first caloric intake of the day to the last — first bite of breakfast to final bite or caloric drink in the evening. This calculator treats the window as a single block of whole hours starting at the first-meal hour entered. What is consumed inside the window, and how it is spaced, sits entirely outside the arithmetic.
How do patterns like 16:8 and 14:10 map onto the inputs?
The second number in the shorthand is the window length: 16:8 means an 8-hour eating window, 14:10 a 10-hour window, and 18:6 a 6-hour window. The first number is what remains of the 24-hour day. To lay out a 16:8 schedule, enter the intended first-meal hour and a window of 8; the tool returns the closing time and confirms the 16 hours outside the window.
Does this tool say anything about whether these schedules work?
No. The calculator reports clock times implied by the numbers entered and nothing more. Research on time-restricted eating is an active field with mixed findings across populations and study designs, and interpreting it for an individual situation is a clinical task. Anyone weighing a change to meal timing — especially with diabetes, medication schedules tied to food, pregnancy, or a history of disordered eating — has reason to involve a physician or registered dietitian.
What happens if my window crosses midnight?
The calculator wraps the result around the 24-hour clock. A first meal at 20:00 with an 8-hour window closes at 04:00 the next morning, and the 16 hours outside the window then run through the daytime, from 04:00 to 20:00. The arithmetic is identical to a daytime window; only the position of the blocks on the clock changes. This layout is common for night-shift schedules.
Why does the tool work in whole hours?
The published pattern shorthand — 16:8, 14:10, 18:6 — is expressed in whole hours, and most people describe their schedules the same way, so whole hours keep the inputs aligned with how these patterns are actually discussed. Real days are messier: a meal that starts at 12:20 shifts every figure by twenty minutes. The tool's output is a template for the day rather than a stopwatch reading.
